Drilling Activity Summary

Description

According to IHS Markit, London-based Highlands Natural Resources Corp. has applied for drilling permits for 76 horizontal Niobrara/Codell exploratory tests in Jefferson County, Colo. The 76 ventures will be split about evenly between Niobrara and Codell. They will be drilled on the company’s West Denver fee leases from three common drillpads in sections 1-2s-70w, 4-2s-70w and 9-2s-70w. Proposed measured depths range from 18,434 ft to 27,587 ft. The horizontal wells will be drilled either the east or west. The company also has applied with the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission for several well spacing units for its West Denver program. The three proposed common drillpads in Township 2s-70w are just outside the boundaries of the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge and within 1 to 5 miles west of the municipalities of Superior, Broomfield and Westminster. The three pads are within 1 to 5 miles southeast and southwest of Superior Field, which has produced oil and gas from vertically-drilled Niobrara and Codell wells. The West Denver projects are controversial as the wildlife refuge was the site of a nuclear weapons plant between the early 1950s and late 1980s. Rocky Flats was converted into a wildlife refuge after a Superfund cleanup of the plant that produced plutonium triggers for nuclear bombs. The Department of Energy retains control of a 1,300-acre fenced core where contaminated waste is buried. Highlands owns a direct 100% working interest in leases covering 3,617 acres, which comprise its West Denver prospect. That prospect, with its surface area largely free of urban development and consolidated into closely grouped parcels, will allow Highlands to move through the permitting and development process more efficiently.
