Williams Partners LP expects ethylene production for sale to begin at its expanded Geismar plant in January, as commissioning efforts for the project near completion, the company said in a Dec. 29 statement.
The plant suffered an explosion on June 13, 2013, due to the failure of a heat exchanger that resulted in two deaths and 114 injuries.
“This commissioning effort has been especially challenging after the uncharacteristically hard shutdown at the time of the incident and as a result of being out of commission for more than a year,” said John Dearborn, senior vice president of NGL and petchem services. “Safety is our number one priority and guides all milestones related to this project as we work to rebuild our reputation as a safe and reliable supplier of olefins.”
The Geismar plant’s capacity is 1.95 billion pounds of ethylene per year. Williams Partners’ share of the total capacity of the expanded plant is about 1.7 billion pounds per year. The Williams Cos. Inc. owns controlling interest in and is the general partner of Williams Partners.
