Brazil’s state-owned Petrobras broke a new domestic record for exploratory drilling by reaching a water depth of 2,990 m drilling a well in the Moita Bonita area of Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, the company said March 18.
Only six exploration wells worldwide have exceeded this depth, and Petrobras (NYSE: PBR) has drilled 15 of the world’s 50 deepest wells, the company added.
The deepwater discoveries in Sergipe-Alagoas Basin since 2010 have revealed a new exploration frontier. The drillstem test, conducted in 2012, confirmed the presence of 41 degree API oil and good reservoir productivity.
The region has eight wells that are deeper than 2,700 m, all drilled within a three-year period. The Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, 92 km from the city Aracaju, has adverse drilling conditions with intense ocean currents, deep water and the need to use more robust drilling equipment such as BOPs, Petrobras said.
