The National Iranian Oil Co. is studying a scheme to deliver gas to India through a pipeline that crosses deepwater sections of the Arabian Sea.
The announcement, made at a gas conference in Abu Dhabi, said India initiated the plan. Further, Italy’s Snamprogetti and Saipem, through a joint venture, have signed a contract with the Iranian company to conduct feasibility studies for a 1,200-mi gas line that would avoid Pakistani waters.
Cost estimates for the Arabian Sea project have not been determined. With water depths reaching 10,000 ft, the price tag is expected to be high. The Iranian company also said Pakistan has been informed and Islamabad has accepted the plan.
In addition, reports say plans for the long-discussed Iran-Pakistan-India onshore gas line continue, despite the difficult relationship between Pakistan and India. Cost of this onshore route remains in the U.S. $3.5 billion range.
