Marketed natural gas production in Pennsylvania grew by an incredible 72% from 2011 to 2012, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). This allowed the state to move from the seventh-largest producer to the third-largest of gas.
The EIA noted that production out of the Marcellus in 2013 could see the state surpass Louisiana as the second-largest producer, behind Texas at number one. Louisiana experienced a 2% decrease in production from 2011 to 2012, while production increased 5% in Texas largely based on growth in the Eagle Ford.
The Marcellus was also responsible for the second-largest growth by a single state during this one-year period as West Virginia production increased 37%, which moved the state into the top ten producers. Overall gas production in the Lower 48 states rose by 5% to 25 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) fro 23.7 Tcf from 2011 to 2012.
