1 Young Oil Corp., Knob Lick, Ky., reports it has brought in a third high-flowing Mississippian Fort Payne Reef oil well in Metcalfe County, Ky., in recent weeks. The newest producer, the #4 Robert Bell in Section 24-H-46, Sulphur Well Quad, came in flowing more than 200 bbl. per day. When the well reached a total depth of 580 ft., it began flowing before the drilling rig could be taken off the location. And, now that the rig has been removed, the well continues to flow. The company currently has eight producing wells on a 1,000-acre lease, three of which came in flowing several hundred bbl. of oil per day. Young believes the limits of the field have been defined and there is room for at least 30 more tests, with development of the field expected to continue throughout this year. 2 Norman, Okla., independent Champ Oil Co. Inc. says it has met with success at the #1 Judson Harmon in Whitley County, Ky., with the well having been put online for an initial flow of 533 bbl. of oil and 500,000 cu. ft. of gas per day. Located in Section 21-C-62, Hollyhill Quad, in the Hayes Creek area, the well was drilled to a total depth of 3,180 ft. in Ordovician Stones River, where, within 12 hr., it yielded more than 800 bbl. of oil and tested gas at an approximate rate of 1.5 million cu. ft. per day. The oil was first encountered at 3,140 ft. and Champ encountered 40 ft. of pay before it was forced to end drilling operations due to the high volume and pressures of the oil and gas pushing the drill steel out of the hole. 3 A 1,500-ft. Mississippian McClosky wildcat is being drilled by J.R. Watts in Kentucky's Daviess County, reports IHS Energy Group. It's the #1 Leo Muncy, in Section 2-O-31, about two miles from the closest previous production in two fields-Philpot to the southwest and Berry School North Consolidated to the east-southeast. 4 The oil potential of Reed City (Dundee-Devonian) is to be evaluated at the B.D. Deans LLC #2-22 USA-State-Yates, a remote wildcat in Section 22-17n-12w, Yates Township, Lake County, Mich. The Mount Pleasant, Mich., firm plans to drill the venture to a depth of 3,600 ft. The test is a twin to the #1-22 USA-State-Yates, which was completed in 1989 as a 9,044-ft. dry hole. At that venture, a drillstem test of Reed City at 3,433-65 ft. recovered 55 cc of oil and 550 cc of water in the sample chamber. Pipe recovery was 570 ft. of mud and water. 5 Ordovician Black River is the primary objective at the #1-4 Burdick, a Calhoun County, Mich., wildcat scheduled to be drilled to a projected depth of 4,040 ft. in Ordovician Prairie du Chien by West Bay Exploration Co., Traverse City, Mich. The drillsite is in Section 4-4s-7w, Burlington Township. 6 Two wildcats have been drilled and cased by Zorin Exploration Ltd.'s wholly owned subsidiary, MAR Oil Co., in Ohio, reports Zorin. In Marion County, Calgary-based MAR's #1 Roszman, Section 29, Grand Township, Marseilles Quad, flared gas and yielded oil from the top of Ordovician while being drilled to a total depth of 1,400 ft., similar to the drilling results at the #1 Hensen, the first well drilled by MAR in Ohio more than a year ago. There was no flaring of gas or oil recovery at the #1 Leslie in Section 12, Marseilles Township, Marseilles Quad, Wyandot County. Zorin says further analysis of both wells, including testing and completion work, is to commence shortly. The #1 Roszman is approximately six miles from the #1 Hensel and the #1 Leslie about 2.5 miles from that well. The #1 Hensel encountered more than 44 ft. of cavern/fracture porosity at the top of the Ordovician. The uppermost fractures were flow-tested for three days in June 2001 at a rate of 1.4 million cu. ft. of gas per day. A month later, the well was recompleted lower in the Ordovician and tested for 20 hr. at a rate of 2 million cu. ft. of gas and 20 bbl. of light oil per day. Zorin notes it holds, through its MAR Oil subsidiary, 13,000 acres of 100%-owned freehold mineral leases in Ohio, together with 22 miles of proprietary seismic. 7 In Ohio's Hocking County, R.C. Poling Co. Inc., Somerset, Ohio, has made a modest Ordovician Cincinnatian Series discovery that was completed for a pump gauge of 10 bbl. of oil per day. IHS Energy Group reports the company's #1 Robinette, Section 3, Starr Township, Union Furnace Quad, is producing from a section below 3,578 ft. The well, a deeper-pool opener in the Union Furnace Field area, was drilled to a total depth of 4,205 ft. Production casing is set at 3,668 ft. 8 Two new exploratory tests scheduled in Ohio by the North Canton, Ohio, firm of Belden & Blake Corp. have the Upper Cambrian Copper Ridge Dolomite as their objective. One of them, the #2 Van Fleet Community in Noble County, is scheduled to go to a depth of 8,700 ft. Located in Section 35, Buffalo Township, Caldwell North Quad, it's a deeper-pool test in an unnamed Upper Devonian Berea pool. The company's second new venture, several miles north-northwest in Wayne County, is a deeper-pool wildcat in Reedsburg Field, a Silurian Clinton pool. It's the 5,800-ft. #1 Quinby in Section 9, Plain Township, Pittsburgh Quad. 9 Cabot Oil & Gas Corp., Houston, is set to drill to 21,000 ft. in basement rock at three new deeper-pool wildcats in West Virginia, according to IHS Energy Group. Included is the #1 M.E. Gainer Heirs in Dekalb District, Burnt House Quad, Gilmer County. This venture is in addition to two 21,000-ft. tests staked earlier in Dekalb District. The remaining two tests are the #1 Watkins and #1 Kevin C. Church et ux., both in Sherman District, Grantsville Quad, Calhoun County. 10 A Covington County, Ala., wildcat-the #1 Federal 16-11-has been started by Dallas independent Ventex Operating Corp. The Southeastern Oil Review reports the test is being drilled toward a target depth of 12,500 ft., with Jurassic Smackover being the objective formation. The drillsite is in Section 16-2n-15e, about 3.5 miles south-southeast of Pleasant Home Field. 11 Palmer Petroleum Inc., Shreveport, La., has begun testing two offsets to its #2 Vanity Fair 1-9, the opener of North Monroeville Field in Section 1-6n-7e, Monroe County, Ala. The company has perforated at 11,236-59 ft. and tested at the #1 McCall 1-11, a west offset to the discovery. Testing is under way at a northwest offset, the #1 McCall 1-7, which has been perforated at 11,175-85 ft. Palmer completed the discovery nearly five years ago flowing 298 bbl. of oil and 157,000 cu. ft. of gas per day on a 13/64-in. choke. Perforations are at 10,906-14 ft. in the Frisco City Sand of Jurassic Haynesville. 12 The #1 Gladys Dunn 10-10, a Paleozoic wildcat workover in Section 10-19s-15w, Pickens County, Ala., has been perforated and is being tested by Medallion Exploration, Midvale, Utah. The Southeastern Oil Review says pipe was originally run to 5,750 ft. at the 6,120-ft. venture that was tested and abandoned in August 1990. Medallion cleaned out to 5,700 ft. and perforated at 5,403-08 and 5,462-72 ft. Buncomb Creek Field lies 2.5 miles northwest of the prospect being tested. 13 Shell Offshore Inc. has begun drilling the #5 State Lease 531 on Mobile Block 113, offshore Alabama' Mobile County. The test, which has a projected depth of 23,330 ft. to evaluate Jurassic Norphlet, is on the east flank of Fairway Field. The Southeastern Oil Review notes that Shell completed the #1 State Lease 531 about 0.5-mile south-southwest of the new venture, flowing 13.7 million cu. ft. of gas per day on a 23/64-in. choke through perforations at 22,150-70 ft. in Norphlet.
