Ropes made with DSM Dyneema’s ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene are being used on many facilities in the offshore oil and gas industry. The company says users are finding this rope invaluable when original steel wire rope and chains that secure mooring legs break or suffer damage.
The backup lines are installed as a safety feature until regular maintenance can be carried out. The system is designed to retain the floating production, storage, and offloading unit in position and to maintain production, gaining time for the operator to mobilize the required vessels and equipment to replace the broken wire leg in case one of the wires fails due to its reduced strength.
