BG Announces Results From New Tanzania Gas Discovery
Drilling Activity Details
Drilling Activity Summary
Description
Another offshore Tanzania deep water gas discovery was announced by BG Group Plc in the northwest margin of Block 1. The #1-Taachui had an estimated 1.4 Tcf in potential recoverable gas reserves. The well had a planned depth of about 4,050 m and was sidetracked for unspecified operational reasons to complete as #1ST1-Taachui. The sidetrack was drilled to 4,215 m. The #1ST1-Taachui hit a single gross column of 289 m of gas within the targeted Cretaceous reservoir interval and the net pay was 155 m. According to the operator, reservoir properties are similar to those found at Mzia, the other Cretaceous-aged discovery on Block 1. Estimates for the mean recoverable resource from the discovery are approximately 1 Tcf. The size of the gas column is such that the discovery could extend into a second compartment to the west, which has the potential to be of a similar size. An appraisal well is under consideration and a drillstem test is underway at the discovery. BG has a 60% interest in Tanzania's Block 1 and the two discoveries in partnership with Ophir Energy, holding the remaining 40%.
