Schlumberger introduced its MagniSphere high-definition NMR logging-while-drilling (LWD) service on Nov. 11. This new service delivers accurate, real-time producibility analysis for optimum well placement, resulting in improved production and recovery in complex reservoirs.

“MagniSphere service provides operators with a full understanding of reservoir producibility while concurrently enabling enhanced drilling performance,” Jesus Lamas, president of well construction, Schlumberger, said. “The service provides operators with automated, high-definition NMR data while drilling, which is used to maximize reservoir exposure and ultimately optimize production.”

Utilizing the industry’s first simultaneous measurements of T1 and T2 distribution while drilling, the MagniSphere service delivers real-time petrophysical evaluation data. This data is integrated into an intelligent processing workflow that provides operators with reservoir data used to identify producible hydrocarbon and enable precision geosteering, thus delivering ideal well placement required to maximize production.

MagniSphere service has undergone extensive field testing, including in the Black Sea region where it enabled an operator drilling an extended reach horizontal section to better characterize the reservoir porosity and permeability profile, improving well placement into a higher quality pay zone. In the Middle East, an operator used real-time NMR logging-while-drilling for several wells in complex carbonate and clastic reservoirs to effectively characterize porosity profiles, identify permeable layers, and detect the presence of heavy oil and tar.
