U.K.-based Hurricane Energy Plc has appointed Antony Maris as CEO and executive director, the company said in a news release Aug. 21.

Maris will work alongside Interim CEO Beverley Smith for a transition period before assuming the CEO role following publication of the company’s interim 2020 financial results scheduled for Sept. 11. At that time, Smith will return to a non-executive role, the company said.

Maris, a 35-year veteran of the oil and gas sector, most recently served as COO of Pharos Energy Plc where he was responsible for the development and operation of several oil fields, in partnerships with others, on projects such as fractured basement reservoirs offshore Vietnam and onshore Yemen, according to the news release.

“His leadership record with entrepreneurial oil and gas companies, and importantly his technical experience and knowledge of the behavior of fractured basement reservoirs, makes him the ideal candidate to lead Hurricane,” Steven McTiernan, chairman of Hurricane, said in the release.

Prior to his 15 years with Pharos, Maris—who holds a bachelor of science degree in petroleum engineering and an MBA—served in various engineering, commercial and management roles with Consort Resources Ltd., LASMO Plc, Monument Oil and Gas Plc and Phillips Petroleum, according to the release.
