Qatar Petroleum selected Honeywell as the main instrument and control contractor to support the North Field East (NFE) project, the world’s largest LNG project being developed by Qatargas on behalf of Qatar Petroleum.

Honeywell, based in Houston, said in an Oct. 22 release that its technology will provide the NFE project with streamlined automation and safety systems while reducing schedule risks and delivering capex efficiencies.

“We’re delighted to play a central role in the largest and most ambitious LNG project in the world,” Tarek Nahl, vice president of global strategic projects at Honeywell, said in a statement. “Our technologies will aid Qatargas in reaching its production targets more efficiently while helping it achieve its safety, reliability, security and profitability metrics.”

The NFE project will support the Qatari’s goal of increasing their total annual production of LNG by 43%—from 77 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to 110 Mtpa. The project includes the development of four new LNG mega-trains as well as associated facilities, and the production starting in 2025 will support the continued economic growth in Qatar.

The project will deploy Honeywell’s industrial internet of things-enabled LEAP™ (lean execution for automation projects) methodology, incorporating virtualization, universal input/output, channel technology and cloud engineering. LEAP approach also provides more predictable construction costs and enables remote project engineering from anywhere in the world which delivers improvements in collaboration and reduction in travel.

Honeywell will implement smart junction boxes technology for control and safety systems to reduce the number of instrumentation cabinets as compared to previous technologies. The implementation of smart junction boxes will enable faster project execution and reduced installation costs.

Honeywell’s instrumentation and control systems will be integrated into the NFE main control building in Ras Laffan Industrial City and instrument technical rooms will be located throughout the process area. The system will include Honeywell’s latest Experion® PKS control and safety solutions, operator training simulation, multivariable process control, pipelines management, instrument asset management, alarm management and plant operation information systems. In addition, Honeywell cybersecurity technology and services will help safeguard the project infrastructure.
