The American Petroleum Institute (API) recently updated API Specification (Spec) 6D, the leading specification for valves for the natural gas and oil industry.
API Spec 6D, Specification for Valves, is utilized on a global scale to help ensure access to reliable and sustainable energy. It defines requirements for the manufacturing of valves indispensable for safe operations and supports the UN Sustainable Development Goal 9, resilient infrastructure.
API Spec 6D is also referenced by the U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) in the Code of Federal Regulations, the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), and multiple states and regulators around the world.
The 25th edition of API Spec 6D includes revisions to accommodate the evolving needs of the industry and to increase the applicability of this specification. It has been reorganized to align requirements with the manufacturing process, making it more accessible and relevant for industry. Notable updates include:
- Changing the title of the specification to reflect its broad use and applicability in the natural gas and petroleum industry
- Including axial valves to the valves covered
- Identifying minimum heating treatment and bolting requirements
- Revising marking requirements and design validation guidance
- Adding Annex A to cover requirements for repair and remanufacture of valves from API 6DR
- Collecting all purchaser-specified requirements into annexes
- Providing guidance referencing API 20 series specifications and standards
The development of the 25th edition is a result of significant international participation from subject matter experts from, but not limited to, members from the United States, Canada, Norway, France, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Brazil and Colombia. Additionally, the API Spec 6D Task Group technical experts come from a variety of sectors including operators, users, manufacturers, consultants and regulators.
Updates included in this document will impact participants of API Monogram/APIQR. There are 681 manufacturers with API 6D licensees that will require compliance to the new edition within twelve (12) months.
