1 Occidental Petroleum Corp. has acquired from Chevron Corp. deep exploration rights in Buena Vista Field adjacent to Occidental's Elk Hills Field in Kern County, Calif. Occidental notes the Buena Vista rights, in addition to lands acquired at recent Bureau of Land Management sales, are being integrated with its Elk Hills properties under a single management team. The Buena Vista rights cover 19,834 acres, bringing to nearly 23,000 acres Occidental's total exploration acreage near Elk Hills. Elk Hills Field covers approximately 47,000 acres; the deal increases Occidental's total position in the area to approximately 70,000 acres. 2 A new location for a wildcat has been staked by Hamar Associates LLC, Ojai, Calif., in Tehama County, Calif. According to IHS Energy Group, the new venture is the #2-11 Reed in Section 11-27n-4w MD. Projected depth and objective are being held confidential. The drill site is six miles northwest of the abandoned Red Bank Creek Field. 3 Gas flowed at the rate of 7.16 million cu. ft. per day, with 160 bbl. of condensate and 13 bbl. of water daily, on an 18/64-in. choke at Denver independent Anschutz Corp.'s #4-26 Anschutz Ranch Deep, a Pennsylvanian Weber discovery in Utah's Anschutz Ranch Field. The deeper-pool opener, which was directionally drilled from a surface location in Section 26-4n-7e on the Overthrust Belt in Summit County, is producing from 13,260-13,489 ft., measured depths (12,663-12,790 ft. true vertical depths). 4 Quinex Energy Corp., Bountiful, Utah, reports it completed the #4-6A2 Sasha on the fringe of Bluebell Field in Duchesne County, Utah, for an initial potential of 990 bbl. of oil per day from Eocene Wasatch. Since going on production, the 15,830-ft. well, in Section 6-1s-2w on Ute Tribal land, has produced an average 1,200 bbl. per day of yellow wax and more than 600,000 cu. ft. per day of gas. Quinex says the well produced $1 million worth of oil in 31 days. The company plans at least two more tests in the area. 5 Houston-based EOG Resources Inc. is set to drill two remote wildcats in Sheridan County, Mont., reports IHS Energy Group. They are the #1-6 Rivotg in Section 6-37n-52e and, 1.5 miles to the southeast, the #1-8 Rovig in Section 8-37n-52e. Both wells are scheduled to go to 10,243 ft. 6 A 13,130-ft. Ordovician Red River well drilled by Nance Petroleum Corp., Billings, in North Dakota's MonDak Field also is a potential Devonian Duperow shallower-pool discovery. The #16-28 Federal, Section 28-148n-104w, McKenzie County, flowed oil at a calculated rate of 1,200 bbl. daily from 27 ft. of pay in Red River, says Denver independent St. Mary Land & Exploration Co., Nance's parent company and a 56.25% working interest owner in the well. Oil was recovered at a calculated rate of 699 bbl. per day during tests of four ft. of pay in Duperow. Test results for both Red River and Duperow were calculated on the basis of drillstem tests. 7 Stockyard Creek Field in Williams County, N.D., was extended about a half-mile northeast when Zinke & Trumbo Inc. pumped oil at an initial rate of 168 bbl. per day, with 167,000 cu. ft. of gas and eight bbl. of water daily, at the #14-10H Tofte. The Tulsa-based company horizontally drilled the stepout from a surface location in Section 10-154n-99w to a bottomhole location in Section 9. The well is producing from an openhole Bluell (Mississippian Mission Canyon-Madison) vertical interval at 9,809-15 ft. Measured total depth is 11,954 ft. and horizontal displacement is 2,276 ft. 8 Burlington Resources Inc., Houston, penetrated 279 ft. of Madison Dolomite, yielding 196 ft. of net pay, based on log analysis at #5-6 Bighorn, the fourth deep Madison well in Wyoming's Madden Field. The Rocky Mountain Oil Journal says the well, in irregular Section 6-38n-89w, Fremont County, was drilled to a total depth of 25,190 ft. in a record 300 days from spud date. Burlington, as operator, holds a 50.6% working interest in the well. Other working interest owners include W.A. Moncrief Jr. (36.1%) and North Central Oil Corp. (13.3%). The publication also reports Burlington is building location for the #6-27 Bighorn in Section 27-39n-90w. This Madison venture has a projected depth of 25,800 ft., a depth that would set a record for the entire Rocky Mountain region. 9 Also in the Madden Field area, Casper independent Double Eagle Petroleum & Mining Co. recorded a flow of 3.5 million cu. ft. of gas per day at the #1 Allen Deep in Section 26-39n-90w, Fremont County. IHS Energy Group reports the stepout, located off the northern flank of the field, was tested in the lowest interval in Tertiary Lower Fort Union, which was expected to be topped at 6,200 ft. The venture, set up as a 14,000-ft. test of Upper Cretaceous Lance, bottomed at 12,150 ft. Double Eagle, as operator, owns a 23.53% working interest in the well before payout and a 36.04 % working interest after payout. 10 Reports from the field indicate EOG Resources tested up to 4 million cu. ft. of gas per day from Upper Cretaceous Lewis at its exploratory venture the #1-13E Powder Mountain Unit in Sweetwater County, Wyo., according to the Rocky Mountain Oil Journal. The prospect was set up as a 13,500-ft. test of Lewis. It's in Section 13-14n-96w, about a half-mile northwest of the company's #21-18 CEPO-Lewis, completed last year flowing 6.743 million cu. ft. of gas per day from Lewis at 13,244-86 ft. 11 W.A. Moncrief Jr., Fort Worth, extended Wyoming's Waltman Field a mile to the east with the completion of the #28-1 Federal, Section 28-37n-86w, Natrona County, flowing 8 million cu. ft. of gas per day. The outpost, projected to 19,550 ft. in subthrust Lower Cretaceous Muddy, is producing from that formation, according to Barrett Resources Corp., Denver, which has a 34% working interest in the well. 12 In Wyoming's Lincoln County, the Chevron USA Inc. #2-29M Chevron-Federal is an Overthrust Belt producer completed on the northern end of the Whitney Canyon-Carter Creek Field complex flowing 8.859 million cu. ft. of gas, 83 bbl. of condensate and one bbl. of water per day. IHS Energy Group reports Chevron's well was tested on a 107.5/64-in. choke from Mission Canyon (Madison) between 14,141-14,804 ft. and Lower Mississippian Lodgepole at 15,343-60 ft. The well was directionally drilled in Section 29-19n-119w. 13 Millennium Field is the name given a new producing area established by Wichita independent Berexco Inc. at the #12-8 Warning in Section 8-1n-36w, Dundy County, Neb. The discovery was completed several months ago producing an average of 160 bbl. of oil and 70 bbl. of water per day from Pennsylvanian Lansing-Kansas City at approximately 4,100 ft. 14 Penwell Energy Inc., Midland, set production casing at the #1-8 Eagle Springs-Federal, an indicated discovery in Section 8-19n-4w, Sandoval County, N.M. According to IHS Energy Group, the prospect was drilled to a total depth of 5,740 ft. It was set up as a 6,000-ft. Jurassic Entrada test.
