Venture Global (VG) started construction on its Calcasieu Pass 2 LNG export facility (CP2) in Louisiana, less than three months after securing a key permit from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

The company announced the start on June 3. In March, the DOE awarded the facility a non-free trade act export authorization. The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission permitted VG to move forward with construction near the end of May.

Once operational, the site will be the company’s third LNG terminal, after Calcasieu Pass LNG and Plaquemines LNG. CP2 will begin production in 2027, using the company’s modular LNG plant design for rapid construction, VG said in its announcement.

At completion, the plant will have a production capacity of 20 million tonnes per year or greater. The project will make VG the largest LNG exporter in the U.S.
