LNG producer Venture Global (VG) filed a request with the federal government March 25 to open the remaining facilities at Calcasieu Pass LNG plant, a facility that has been producing LNG for more than two years.
Since LNG production started in January 2022, Venture Global has said the plant has continually been in the commissioning process and is legally incomplete, which allows it to sell LNG on the global spot market instead of to its long-term customers.
The move led its long-term customers to file for arbitration.
In VG’s request, the company askes for authorization for Calcasieu Pass “to place in-service the remainder of the facilities for the Project: Power Power Island, Pre-Treatment, LNG Storage, Boil-Off Gas, and Marine Facilities,” according to a submission to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
With FERC’s permission, the plant would fully commence operations by April 1, according to the request. VG’s statement did not specify that, with completion, the site would be fully commissioned.
The CEO of Shell, one of the plant’s long-term customers, said March 25 that he expects to have updates to the arbitration hearings over the next few months.
CEO Wael Sawan made the comment during Shell’s capital markets day in New York City, according to a Reuters report.
Shell, BP, Italy’s Edison and Repsol are among the customers involved in arbitration.
