Below we take a look at upstream deal-making activity in the U.S. from the first half of the year including the blockbuster takeover of Anadarko Petroleum Corp.

In total, the U.S. E&P sector saw 72 deals announced or closed during first-half 2019. The number of transactions dropped from our tally of second-half 2018 deals (116) and first-half 2018 deals (125).

Topping the list was the completion of multibillion-dollar mergers between Encana Corp. and Newfield Exploration Co. as well as Chesapeake Energy Corp. and WildHorse Resource Development Corp.

The first half of 2019 also saw the announcement of Occidental Petroleum Corp.’s $57 billion (including debt) acquisition of Anadarko and the takeout of Haynesville private operator Covey Park Energy LLC by Comstock Resources Inc.
