Turkey announced it has discovered 75 Bcm of natural gas reserves in the western Black Sea at an economic value of US$30 billion.
Turkish Petroleum Corp. and its subsidiary Turkish Petroleum Offshore Technology Center drilled the Göktepe-3 detection well at a depth of 3,500 m with the seventh-generation drillship Abdulhamid Han.
The Göktepe-3 field will use the nearby Sakarya Gas Field’s floating production platform, land facility and distribution infrastructure.
To date, Turkey has drilled 11 wells in the Mediterranean and 38 wells in the Black Sea, said President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on May 17 in a public announcement.
The discovery brings Turkey closer to energy independence, Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said.
In March, Turkish Petroleum signed a joint venture with Continental Resources and TransAtlantic Petroleum to explore unconventional oil and gas resources in Turkey.
