Three Bechtel construction workers died April 29 in an incident involving a concrete scaffolding at Sempra Energy’s Port Arthur LNG construction site, Bechtel confirmed in an announcement posted the same day.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm a tank jump form system incident occurred at elevation on April 29 at the Port Arthur LNG construction site, resulting in three fatalities and two injuries,” Bechtel posted on its website.
“Tank jump form system” is a scaffolding framework used to build vertical concrete structures.
The two injured personnel have been released from the hospital, Reuters reported.
Bechtel has suspended work on the site until an investigation can be completed. The company said it is cooperating fully with local authorities as investigations continue “and have launched our own internal review.”
Sempra's Port Arthur Phase 1 LNG project is a 13 million tonnes per year facility in Southeast Texas. Sempra plans for the first LNG to be produced in 2027.
