The Tarim oilfield in northwest China now injects 1.27 Bcf 36 MMcm of natural gas a day into the country's west-to-east gas pipeline, up 38% compared with early 2006.

That is enough for 100,000 three-person families for 500 days, according to Tarim Oilfields Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corp.

Last year, the Tarim field produced 388 Bcf (11 Bcm) of gas, piping 346 Bcf (9.8 Bcm) to eastern regions.

CNPC Tarim Oilfields is a key player in the 2,608-mile (4,200-km) pipeline, which begins in Lunnan, southern Xinjiang, and ends in Baihe Town in east China's Shanghai, with a designed annual transmission capacity of 424 Bcf (12 Bcm).

The pipeline now supplies gas to more than 70 cities in 12 provinces or regions, including Jiangsu, Hunan, Hubei, Tianjin and Beijing.

Tarim field plans to produce 540 Bcf (15.3 Bcm) of gas this year.

Situated in southern Xinjiang, the 216,216-sq-mile (560,000-sq-km) Tarim Basin has proven oil reserves of 3.85 billion bbl (526 million tonnes) of liquids and 25.6 Tcf (724 Bcm) of gas.
