Canada’s first major LNG export project could begin selling shipments as soon as late June, according to a May 12 report from Bloomberg.

The report, citing anonymous sources, said LNG Canada executives on the project, majority-owned by Shell, were planning to start cargo sales before the facility officially goes online.

The liquefication facility is undergoing testing leading up to the start of equipment ahead of the start of LNG production, scheduled for the middle of the year. The plans could change, depending on the stage of completion.

The export terminal is designed to have a 14 million tonnes per year (mtpa) capacity, and is under construction at Kitimat, British Columbia, on the Canadian west coast.

If it starts production on schedule, it will be one of possibly two new LNG facilities in North America opening this year. Golden Pass LNG, an 18 mtpa project owned by Qatar and Exxon Mobil, is expected to begin production by the end of 2025 or late 2026.
