Occidental Petroleum Corp.’s subsidiary 1PointFive is enlisting Siemens Energy compressor technology at the world's first large-scale direct air capture plant it is developing in the Permian Basin, Siemens announced in a press release and at CERAWeek in Houston on March 6. 

Siemens will provide a motor-driven 13,000 hp fully modular wet gas compressor package and a motor-driven 8,500 hp dry gas compressor, giving the plant the capability to capture 500,000 metric tons per year of CO2. Captured CO2 will be compressed, processed and pressurized to be injected into underground reservoirs via pipeline. 

1PointFive’s plant will provide solutions for hard-to-decarbonize industries. Captured carbon can be sequestered underground in saline formations or to produce hydrocarbons for low-carbon or net-zero transportation fuels, as well as in chemicals and building materials. 

“We are leveraging Oxy’s core competence in carbon management to capture and sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide to help meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and reduce emissions globally,” said Vicki Hollub, Occidental president and CEO. “Our first Direct Air Capture plant will advance industrial-scale carbon capture to provide a solution to help Oxy and others accelerate their respective paths to net zero.”
