Golden Gas Service Co. announced the start of a non-binding open season for up to 2.4 Bcf of firm natural gas storage capacity at a proposed salt cavern site in Kiowa County, Kansas.
The season began June 16 and runs through July 18, the company said in its press release.
Golden Gas’ proposed Joy Station Natural Gas Storage Project offers capacity for demand in the midcontinent region. During the open season, Golden Gas will collect non-binding bids from interested parties who may later participate in a binding open season.
Only participants in this round will be eligible for future definitive agreements.
Joy Station’s initial phase is designed to offer up to 2.4 Bcf of working gas capacity, with injection and withdrawal capabilities of up to 160 MMcf/d. Upon completion of Phase IV, total working gas capacity could rise to 9.6 Bcf.
The project is located for interconnectivity with several major regional pipelines, including Southern Star, Cheyenne Plains and Northern Natural.
“This open season represents the next step in bringing a new source of flexibility and reliability to the Kansas and Midcontinent markets," said Alan Staab, Golden Gas CEO.

The company plans to secure its Class I injection and storage permits from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment later this summer. A final investment decision is expected after the permitting is complete, with service scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2029.
Interested parties must sign a mutual confidentiality agreement to access bid instructions and project documentation.
