The latest Arctic blast has sent natural gas prices at the Henry Hub back over $4/MMBtu for the first time since Jan. 24, just before the news about China’s DeepSeek AI application hit the market.
The Henry Hub front-month futures price closed at $4.01/MMBtu on Feb. 18. As the cold weather set in overnight, the price leaped to $4.20/MMBtu when the market opened. Prices remained at $4.20 or higher in early trading.
The cold front that moved through the central U.S. threatened a freeze-off of natural gas production along with a greater demand for heating.
Extreme cold watches were issued for much of the continental U.S. on Feb. 18. Meteorologists in Dallas reported record-low temperatures. Major snowstorms were predicted for much of the mid-Atlantic and Southeast. The National Weather Service expected the cold temperatures to last through the weekend.
