Canada’s largest refinery has started a $100 million upgrade to a processing unit, owner Irving Oil announced June 5.

The St. John refinery is a 320,000 bbl/d facility in New Brunswick. Irving Oil said it plans to upgrade its fluid catalytic cracking unit (FCCU), which is responsible for much of the process of turning crude into gasoline and diesel fuel.

“This FCCU Revamp Project is an essential investment in energy security for all the regions we serve,” said Jeff Matthews, Irving Oil president and CEO, in the release.

According to the company, the project will create 675 jobs in the construction trades during the build. The press release did not include information on how long the construction on the project would last.
