Cox in Webster Parish, La.-and has set up two additional drilling sites. The company says the well initially flowed at an average rate of 5.6 million cu. ft. of gas per day and now averages 6.2 million cu. ft. per day. IHS Energy Group reports the well, in Section 28-19n-8w, is operated by Shreveport independent O'Brien Energy Co. and produces through perforations at 10,768-88 ft. in Cotton Valley. 9 BP , Houston, has announced a major new discovery in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico near the company's billion-barrel Crazy Horse find. The #1 OCS-G-9866 was drilled in 5,640 ft. of water to a total depth of 26,046 ft., and encountered 581 net ft. of pay in three intervals. The discovery, dubbed Crazy Horse North, was drilled on Mississippian Canyon Block 776, just five miles northwest of the original Crazy Horse discovery. According to BP, the new find is on a separate structure from the Crazy Horse accumulation and by itself ranks in the top five fields ever found in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. BP also notes that the drilling data covering its initial Crazy Horse discovery, and a recently completed appraisal well, confirm that Crazy Horse is at least a one-billion-bbl. find, making it the largest discovery ever made in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. #1 OCS-G-14658 appraisal well was drilled in 6,300 ft. of water on Block 822, 1.5 miles southeast of the discovery. It encountered 675 net ft. of pay in three primary intervals and bottomed at 29,060 ft. BP operates and owns 75% of the Crazy Horse and Crazy Horse North projects, with partner Exxon Mobil owning the remaining 25%. Meanwhile, Exxon Mobil has revealed plans to drill a wildcat on its Hawkes prospect, located on Mississippi Canyon blocks 508 and 509. The area is about 20 miles northwest of Crazy Horse North.
