Fermi America agreed to acquire more than 600 megawatts (MW) of clean, gas-fired power for its Amarillo HyperGrid campus, the organization announced July 2.

The company bought a set of six combined-cycle gas turbines from South American firm Firebird LNG in conjunction with Siemens Energy, which manufactures the equipment. The deal also includes six heat recovery steam generators and one steam turbine.

The package, which reflects an ISO-rated capacity of 478 MW, is estimated to be 400-plus MW at site elevation, Fermi said.

The deal was part of the company’s pledge to provide its campus with 1 gigawatt (GW) of power by the end of 2026. In June, the company bought three used industrial gas turbines capable of producing 200 MW from a New Jersey company.

Fermi America went public with its development project on June 26. The company, co-founded by former U.S. Energy Secretary and Governor of Texas Rick Perry, plans to build a massive power and AI data campus in Amarillo, Texas. The Texas Tech University system is a partner in the project.

The 5,769-acre campus will be powered by natural gas, nuclear and renewable energy, most of which is planned for construction on-site.

"Behind-the-meter power isn't just a Fermi advantage—it's the only solution for America's AI dominance," said Fermi America co-founder Toby Neugebauer in the July 2 announcement. "Without it, we're handing China the keys to AI."
