Located in Houston—the self-proclaimed “energy capital of the world,” the Petroleum Club of Houston has played an important role in bringing the industry together and this year it will be celebrating its 75th anniversary.

President Paula Harris, who recently sat down with Hart Energy to discuss the club’s anniversary, said the entire year has been filled with events celebrating the club’s monumental year that will cumulate on Oct. 29 with the Petroleum Club of Houston’s 75th anniversary gala.

“As we have gone through this transition, we still know that our industry—oil and gas, fossil fuels, the energy industry as a whole—has made not only Houston the energy capital, but the United States as not dependent on external or international industries,” said Harris.

“We’re celebrating all that,” she continued. “We’re celebrating the old, we’re celebrating the new, we’re celebrating the changes.”

Harris, a former long-time executive at Schlumberger, also spoke about her goals for the Petroleum Club of Houston as the club’s first black president as well as the second woman president plus how the 75-year-old organization is adjusting to the global push for an energy transition and climate action.

“We’re not here to fight,” she said. “We’re here to make this place better, safer, cleaner, but at the same time make sure that we have some successful careers and some successful businesses that start right here.”
