Equitrans Midstream, operator of the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) in Virginia Jefferson National Forest, agreed to new safety measures after the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) issued a consent order Oct. 3.
In accordance with the terms of the agreement, Equitrans and Mountain Valley Pipeline LLC agreed to PHMSA terms on transparently outlining the pipeline’s development to reinforce public confidence in the safe operation of the pipeline.
According to the agreement, engineering firm KTA-Tator Inc. will serve as MVP’s independent, third-party pipeline coating expert. KTA will conduct a field audit of MVP’s pipeline coating activities to observe ongoing coating assessment and remediation and implement needed procedures throughout the project’s construction.
The agreement will also accelerate MVP’s timeline for pipeline integrity inspections and cathodic protection surveys.
“Importantly, the agreement outlines actions that are designed to reassure the public of MVP’s integrity and demonstrates our commitment to safe, responsible construction and in-service operations,” Diana Charletta, Equitrans president and COO, said in a press release. “Safety has been, and will remain, MVP’s top priority.”
