Equinor and GRTgaz’s network will take captured industrial CO2 from France to Equinor's offshore storage site via the CO2 Highway Europe pipeline network.
Equinor and French natural gas transmission system operator GRTgaz agreed June 17 to build a transport system shipping CO2 from the French industrial area around Dunkirk to a storage site offshore Norway.
GRTgaz will develop a 19-mile onshore pipeline network and a compressor station to flow the gas into Equinor’s offshore CO2 Highway Europe pipeline network to be stored under the seabed. The project is expected to be commissioned in 2029.
Norway-based Equinor said in a press release that the network's initial capacity will be 3 million tonnes per year (mtpy) to 5.5 mtpy of CO2 and can be expanded to other areas of France as needed.
“For industries that cannot decarbonize directly through clean power, carbon capture and storage offers a viable solution,” said Grete Tveit, Equinor senior vice president for low carbon solutions. “By building CO2 transport and storage solutions at an industrial scale together with GRTgaz, we can help carbon-intensive industries in France to continue developing and securing jobs and value creation in a sustainable future.
