Drivers for Energy Transfer will decide in May on remaining in the United Steelworkers Union, the National Right to Work Foundation said April 22.
Driver Jay Fifer, who is based in Hearne, Texas, filed the petition with the National Labor Relations Board (NRLB) on April 11. The NRLB published a notice of election document on April 22.
The vote will cover Energy Transfer drivers in Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma.
“Support among us drivers for this Steelworkers union is very low where I work,” Fifer said in the right-to-work organization’s press release. “It’s not fair for Steelworkers officials to dictate major things about our work lives when very few drivers at all are union members.”
The National Right to Work Foundation provided legal advice to the petitioning drivers. The non-profit organization's goals are eliminating coercive union power and compulsory unionism abuses through strategic litigation, public information and education programs, according to its web site.
The National Labor Relations Board will oversee the election. Ballots will be sent around May 7; in-person voting begins May 15. The vote will end May 30, according to the National Right to Work Foundation.
The steel workers union did not return a request for comment from Hart Energy.
