1 LaVanway Exploration Co. LLC, Charlevoix, Mich., was successful at the #1-21 Victory, a wildcat it drilled in Section 21-19n-17w, Victory Township, Mason County, Mich. IHS Energy Group reports LaVanway recovered sour gas at a calculated absolute open flow rate of 54 million cu. ft. per day from an openhole interval at 4,161-92 ft. on completion of the Silurian Brown Niagaran discovery. The new producer has been designated the discovery well for Victory 21-19n-17w Field. 2 Another Brown Niagaran gas discovery has been completed in Michigan-the Sturgeon Point Development Co. #1 State-Troy & Michigan State University that flowed 1 million cu. ft. per day. The Traverse City firm perforated at 3,383-97 ft. at the wildcat, which was directionally drilled from a surface location in Section 9-2n-11e, Troy Township, Oakland County, to a measured total depth of 3,527 ft. The drillsite is within the city limits of Troy. 3 The search for Niagaran production in Michigan continues, with Land One LLC having staked two exploratory tests in Calhoun County. One of them is a 3,200-ft. wildcat in Bedford Township-the #1-18 Land One in Section 18-1s-8w. About 12 miles east, in Convis Township, the company is set to drill to 3,500 ft. at the #1-6 Farms One in Section 6-1s-6w. This venture is a half-mile northwest stepout from Convis 8-1s-6w Pool A Field. 4 The Devonian Richfield Amherstberg pool in Michigan's West Branch Field was extended 0.5-mile north when Denver independent Duncan Oil Inc. tested 63 bbl. of oil, 125,000 cu. ft. of gas and 217 bbl. of water per day at the #1-21 Wrangler in Ogemaw County. The outpost, in Section 21-22n-2e, West Branch Township, is producing from several intervals in the two formations between 3,974-4,180 ft. It was drilled in an area that has production from shallower Devonian Traverse, Dundee and Detroit River. 5 Young Oil Corp., Knob Lick, Ky., reports a shallow well it drilled at the 524-ft. #3 Sylvia Mitchell in Metcalfe County, Ky., came in flowing at a rate of 60 bbl. of oil per hr. when drilled into Mississippian Fort Payne Reef. The well is in Section 24-H-46, Sulphur Well Quad, in Knob Lick Consolidated Field. The company says that, based on initial flow rates, the well is expected to produce more than 200 bbl. of oil per day on pump. Young notes there has been little drilling in Metcalfe County in the last 17 years. The company has about 900 acres under lease and expects to continue drilling until the entire Fort Payne Field is defined. 6 Kentucky's Muhlenberg County is scheduled to get two new Mississippian McClosky Lime wildcats, according to IHS Energy Group. The deeper of the two is the 2,550-ft. #1 C.B. Wheeler Trust & Hanner Heirs et al., scheduled by Evansville independent Barger Engineering Inc. in Section 2-J-27. Projected depth is 2,500 ft. at the Stanoco Oil Co. #1 Kirkpatrick Beech Creek Mining Co. in Section 11-I-29. Stanoco is based in Greenville, Ky. 7 The Wichita Falls, Texas, firm of Taubert Energy LLC has staked a wildcat at the #1-17 Cowling in Section 17-3s-10e, Edwards County, Ill. Scheduled to be drilled to 4,600 ft. in Mississippian Warsaw, the venture is designed to evaluate Pennsylvanian and Mississippian zones. 8 A wildcat staked by Schofield Energy Co., Evansville, about fve miles off the eastern flank of the giant Louden Field in Illinois is set up as a 3,750-ft. test of potential pays through Devonian. IHS Energy Group reports the venture is the #1 Randall Trust in Section 16-7n-4e, Effingham County. 9 The Ebers Drilling Co. #4 Ralph Wilson is a new remote 1,950-ft. Silurian wildcat that's planned for Section 25-6s-6w, Randolph County, Ill. Chester, Ill.-based Ebers' venture offsets a pair of unsuccessful shallow Mississippian Tar Springs wildcats drilled by the company on the lease in 1998 and 1999 that didn't reach 400 ft. There are no producing wells within 11 miles of the new project. 10 In West Virginia's Boone County, a new-field opener completed by Dominion Exploration & Production Inc., Jane Lew, W.Va., flowed 1.6 million cu. ft. of gas per day from four pay zones. The #5719 Charleston National Bank, Crook District, Lorado Quad, was tested in Mississippian Big Lime between 2,440-2,542 ft. and Upper Devonian Gordon between 3,196-3,890, Upper Huron at 4,333-86 and Lower Huron between 4,644-5,517 ft. 11 Equitable Production Co., Charleston, W.Va., tested a flow of 6.529 million cu. ft. of gas per day from Upper Devonian Berea at the #507497 David L. Francis Testamentary Trust et al. in Logan County, W.Va. The development well in Triadelphia District, Mallory Quad, is producing from an openhole interval between 3,531-3,619 ft. 12 In Alabama, Bright Star Management LLC, Jackson, Miss., is waiting on a completion rig after running pipe to 13,078 ft., 15 ft. off bottom, at a Jurassic Smackover wildcat-the #1 Kelly 16-2 in Conecuh County. The Southeastern Oil Review reports the prospect was drilled in Section 16-5n-8e, about six miles northeast of East Corley Creek Field. 13 Mississippian Lewis Sand, perforated at 2,336-43 ft., gave up a flow of gas at the rate of 800,000 cu. ft. per day at a wildcat tested by Lavon Evans Jr. Operating Co. Inc. in Marion County, Ala. According to the Southeastern Oil Review, the Laurel, Miss., operator set pipe at a total depth of 2,383 ft. at the #1 Allman 28-1 in Section 28-12s-13w. A northwest offset-the #1 Moore 21-15 in Section 21-is being evaluated. Evans has perforated at 2,300-12 ft., 2,317-19 and 2,326-40 ft. in Lewis. 14 Exploratory activity in Lamar County, Ala., includes work by Moon-Hines-Tigrett Operating Co.
