Carbon TerraVault Enters Into Two CO2 Management Agreements, Submits Class VI Permit to EPA

California Resources Corp.’s subsidiary Carbon TerraVault Holdings LLC announced on May 1 two separate storage-only CO₂ management agreements with Yosemite Clean Energy LLC and InEnTec Inc.

The storage-only CO₂ management agreement with Yosemite was for 40,000 metric tons per annum of CO₂ injection. Carbon Terravault and InEnTec agreed on 100,000 metric tons per annum of CO₂ injection.

With the two new CO₂ management agreements, Carbon Terravault’s total injection rate is 610,000 metric tons per annum, with 200,000 metric tons per annum targeted to Elk Hills reservoir and 410 metric tons per annum targeted in the Sacramento basin area.

Carbon Terravault’s CO₂ management agreement with Yosemite is to sequester at least 40,000 metric tons per annum of CO₂ at Carbon Terravault’s carbon storage vaults from Yosemite Hydrogen Facility, a new hydrogen plant to be constructed in Northern California and expected to be operating by 2026. The facility is expected to produce 24,000 kg/day of hydrogen, which is an initial 80,000 metric tons per annum of associated CO₂—40,000 metric tons per annum will be used for the Yosemite’s internal needs and the rest to be permanently sequestered.

InEnTec is planning to build a renewable dimethyl ether production facility at California Resources’ New Zero Industrial Park in California. The facility is expected to produce 80 tons/d to 100 tons/d of rDME from biomass and other waste materials, and Carbon Terravault’s CO₂ management agreement with InEnTec is to sequester initially at the minimum 100,000 metric tons per annum of associated CO₂ from the facility in Carbon Terravault I’s carbon storage vault.

Carbon Terravault also submitted a Class VI permit to the Environmental Protection Agency for 34 MMmt of CO₂ storage for Carbon Terravault IV, which will bring Carbon Terravault’s total potential permitted storage to 174 MMmt.
