BP loaded the first LNG cargo from its project located offshore Mauritania and Senegal, the company announced April 17.
The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) LNG facility is BP’s third major upstream startup so far in 2025, as the company focuses on increasing its upstream sector. BP has plans for seven more similar startups by 2027, the company said in its release.
GTA is one of the deepest offshore developments in Africa, with gas resources in water depths of up to 2,850 m. At completion, GTA Phase 1 will produce around 2.4 million tons a year (mtpa). Per agreement, the plant will allocate part of its production to Mauritania and Senegal.
“Starting exports from GTA Phase 1 is an important step for BP and our oil and gas business as we celebrate the creation of a new production hub within our global portfolio,” BP Executive Vice President for Production and Operations Gordon Birrell said in a press release.
