BKV Corp., the largest natural gas producer in the Barnett, is taking its carbon capture and storage (CCS) expertise to the Eagle Ford.
The Colorado-headquartered company announced on Feb. 13 a partnership with an unnamed “leading diversified midstream energy company” for the project that aims to capture and sequester about 90,000 metric tons of CO2e. A final investment decision for the project was reached in mid-December 2024, BKV said in a news release.
The alliance is taking shape as companies continue efforts to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. The move strengthens BKV’s carbon capture, utilization and sequestration (CCUS) portfolio.
“Collaborating with one of the largest energy companies in the United States is critical for advancing our closed loop, net-zero strategy of deploying profitable CCUS assets,” said BKV CEO Chris Kalnin. “We are thrilled at the opportunity to continue deployments of our emissions reduction technology.”
BKV said it plans to purchase the CO2 waste stream from a natural gas processing plant near Freer, Texas. The CO2 will be compressed before being transported and permanently sequestered at an adjacent site.
The Texas Railroad Commission has already approved the project’s Class II injection well, BKV said, and the project’s monitoring, reporting and verification plan has been submitted to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for approval.
If all required permits are secured, the project will begin full operations in first-quarter 2026.
BKV, which went public in September 2024, said the partnership with the midstream operator “sets the stage for collaboration on future projects between the two companies.”
Currently, BKV’s CCS portfolio includes Barnett Zero and Cotton Cove.
Located in North Texas, Barnett Zero began operations in 2023 and has since sequestered more than 140,000 tons of CO2. During the third quarter of 2024, the company reported more than 50,000 tons of CO2 were sequestered.
EnLink Midstream is BKV’s partner at Barnett Zero. EnLink transports natural gas produced by BKV in the Barnett to EnLink’s natural gas processing plant in Bridgeport, Texas. The CO2 waste stream is captured at the plant and transported to a BKV facility, compressed, and then sequestered via BKV’s nearby underground injection control well.
The Cotton Cove CCS project, which also reached FID, is set to start initial sequestration operations in first-half 2026. Also located in the Barnett, Cotton Cove is a joint venture with Banpu Power US Corp.
