Canada's top gas well of 2003 was in Bubbles Field, northeast British Columbia, says Steven I. Paget, Calgary-based analyst with FirstEnergy Capital Corp. The British Gas A-47-A/94-G-8 produced at an average rate of 22.3 million cubic feet of gas per day its first three months online. The second-best Canadian well of 2003 was in Sukunka Field, in the foothills play in British Columbia. The Talisman B-94-K/93-P-4 produced an average of 21.1 million cubic feet of gas per day during its first three months online. The company with the most new Canadian gas production was EnCana, which added 586 million cubic feet per day in 2003 from 2,810 separate zones. Burlington Resources brought 392 million cubic feet of daily gas production online last year from 522 zones. The companies' results illustrate two different approaches to western Canada, says Paget. EnCana's drilling programs target low-rate, low-risk shallow-gas wells, while Burlington hunts for higher-productivity wells. "Both strategies have their benefits and drawbacks and it is the ability to execute that will differentiate the low-cost operators going forward," he says.
