Ameresco Inc. announced commercial operation has begun at its landfill gas to renewable natural gas (RNG) plant at Republic Services’ Benson Valley Landfill in Frankfurt, Kentucky, according to an Oct. 19 release.
Ameresco stated the facility has a gross nameplate of over 483,552 dekatherms per year and can process 2,000 standard cubic feet per minute of raw landfill gas. The Benson Valley Landfill intends to reduce 27,440 tons of CO2 emissions per year and works to ensure availability of clean energy resources, according to the release.
“Our long-standing partnership with Ameresco enables us to capture naturally occurring gas created by decomposing waste in our landfill and convert that gas into a low-carbon fuel source that reduces greenhouse gas emissions,” said Larson Richardson, Republic Services area president.
This operation marks the company’s eighth renewable energy project with Republic and another 10 projects in various stages of development.
