Leaders of Canada’s largest energy companies pleaded with their government to simplify regulation and allow further growth by repealing laws and encouraging investments.
“We are at a turning point in Canada’s history and national interest,” the letter begins.
Fourteen executives signed the note, released March 16. The signatories include executives such as Greg Ebel, CEO of midstream giant Enbridge, ARC Resources CEO Terry Anderson and Suncor Energy CEO Rich Kruger.
The letter was addressed to the leaders of Canada’s four primary political parties. The executives asked for changes in environmental regulations and reduced timelines for project approval.
The executives also asked for the federal government’s carbon levy to be eliminated and for the regulation to be handled at the provincial level.
The note followed a letter from environmental groups sent three days earlier to Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney, asking for more involvement in the lawmaking process.
