Rhino Resources reported finding oil in Petroleum Exploration License (PEL) 85 offshore Namibia with its Capricornus 1-X exploration well. BP confirmed the preliminary results in an April 24 press release.

Rhino said the well, spudded on Feb. 17 using the Noble Venturer drillship, reached total depth on April 2 and found 38 m of net pay.

The well achieved a surface-constrained flow rate exceeding 11,000 stock tank barrels per day of light oil (37 °API) on a 40/64” choke. The crude had limited associated gas with less than 2% CO2 and no hydrogen sulphide.

Rhino said the samples will be tested and the well temporarily plugged.

PEL 85, where the well was drilled, is in the Orange Basin offshore the southwest African nation. Rhino is the owner-operator with 42.5% interest. Azure Energy, co-owned by BP and Eni, also holds 42.5% interest. Namcor, the national oil company, owns 10% and Korres Investments owns 5%.
