Beijing-based China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC) has reported a gas discovery in the Chinese sector of the South China Sea. The #25-1-1 Lingshui deepwater exploration well is northeast of Ledong Sag in Qiongdongnan Basin. Area water depth averages 980 m. The discovery was drilled and completed at 4,000 m and encountered 73-m oil and gas pay zone. During testing, it produced approximately 35.6 MMcf of gas and 395 bbl of oil per day. According to the company, the new discovery will likely open new exploration in the deepwater area of the northern South China Sea and further prove the exploration prospects in the deepwater area of Qiongdongnan Basin.
