Shell Oil Co. has permitted the first exploratory test on its two-block Aransas prospect in the Gulf of Mexico. The #1 OCS G35431 will be in the northwestern portion of Atwater Valley Block 198. The Aransas prospect is made up of Block 198 and adjacent Block 154 (OCS G35019) to the north. According to the prospect’s exploration plan, the Houston-based company could drill up to eight tests on the two tracts. Water depth in the area is 4,900 ft. Shell bought the drilling rights to Block 154 at OCS Sale 227 held in 2013 from Freeport McMoRan Oil & Gas, which initially acquired the Block 198 lease in 2014.
