Oil India Ltd is planning shale oil and gas exploration on five of its blocks in India's Arunachal Pradesh and Assam states. Oil India has petitioned the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas for exploration in Deomali and Jairampur; Arunachal Pradesh; Chabua; Dibrugarh; Dumduma and Assam. According to the Duliajan-based company, there is high potential in the Dishang Shales in Deomali, which are thought to extend across Arunachal from Tirap District to Kohima and perhaps Manipur. Reserves have been estimated at approximately 99.44 Bbbl of oil equivalent. India's Union Cabinet has previously approved a proposal by the ministry to allow state-owned oil and gas companies to explore for shale oil and gas within their current license areas. Estimates indicate that potential shale gas reserves are approximately 527 Tcf.
