Description

Aramco has begun an exploration campaign to explore and quantify unconventional gas deposits in Saudi Arabia. According to the Dhahran-based company, the three most promising areas are in the Al-Hudud ash Shamaliyah (Northern Border) Province at Turaif. Aramco has awarded JGC Corporation a contract for the construction of its System A shale gas complex at the Waad al-Shamal development in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Additional areas of exploration have been identified in the Eastern Province, and in the northern Rub al-Khali. Initially, the company will be looking for gas production for the country's power and chemical industries. Shale gas volumes have been found in the Jafurah Basin southeast of Ghawar and near Al Ahsa in the Rub al Khali. Additionally, the company anticipates that there are also significant volumes of liquids to be found. Aramco intends to double its gas production within a decade to approximately 23 Bcf per day. Saudi Aramco has committed to invest $7 billion in the exploration and development of Saudi Arabia's shale oil and gas deposits. Experts speculate that Saudi Arabia may have 447-645 Tcf in undeveloped shale gas reserves. Its largest identified shale gas deposit is the Qusaiba Paleozoic reservoir in the Rub Al-Khali, south of the Kingdom's Ghawar Field.
