IHS Markit announced that BHP Billiton Ltd. has permitted the first exploratory test on the company’s four-block Scimitar prospect. The venture, #1 OCS G32499, will be in Green Canyon Block 392. According to the company’s plan, as many as 14 deepwater tests could be drilled on Green Canyon Block 348 (OCS G31716), Block 392, Block 436 (OCS G32506) and Block 480 (OCS G32512). Area water depth is about 4,000 ft. Two of the blocks in the Melbourne, Australia-based company’s Scimitar prospect are some of the most costly leases sold at offshore lease sales since 2007. No previous drilling has taken place in the four-block area, but ConocoPhillips Co. was active on a nearby tract in 2003.
