Drilling Activity Summary

Description

Aramco is expanding its Shaybah Field in Saudi Arabia's Rub al-Khali (Empty Quarter) to increase its production capacity for oil and natural gas liquids. The Dhahran-based company reported that the expansion project involves an increase in oil output of about 250 Mbbl per day. The project will bring the field's production capacity to about 1 MMbbl per day of light crude oil by April 2016, which will be twice its initial capacity set in 1998. This will be partly achieved by improved well design to increase the average reservoir contact at 10,000 ft to tap into deep, tight faces. Aramco also plans to build a new NGL plant at the field to meet the growing demand for petrochemical feedstock by extracting natural gas liquids from the produced gas beginning in late 2015. Currently, Shaybah Field has a total of 255 wells - 205 horizontal, 34 vertical, eight gas injection, and five groundwater. The field's estimated reserves are approximately 14 Bbbl of crude oil and 25 Tcf of gas. The expansions will allow production from more mature fields to be decreased to extend their lives and will rebalance the crude produced from the heavier crude currently produced by introducing more extra light from Khurais to match market needs.
